Indigenous communities have significantly greater rates of preterm birth than the general Australian population.

When this fact is coupled with documented evidence that many Indigenous women give birth in remote settings that are far from advanced medical support, possibly far from the mother’s support network, and often into socio-economic challenges, it is clear why this is a national health priority.

Operating on the understanding that strong relationships deliver meaningful and successful research outcomes, our researchers are extremely mindful of being inclusive, respectful and culturally sensitive in their endeavours.

As well as championing person-to-person health interventions, our researchers take advantage of technology and use tools such as mobile apps which help inform mothers of nutritional advice, in the aim of avoiding low birthweights and associated long-term consequences.
